Příběh knihy The Jane Austen Book Club se odehrává v Californii v Údolí Sacramenta. Šest postav (pět žen a jeden muž) vstoupí do knižního klubu, v rámci kterého společně čtou romány Jane Austenové a vždy na konci měsíce v průběhu poloviny roku se scházejí, aby hovořili o svých myšlenkách a poznatcích ze čtení knih a později také o zkušenostech z vlastních prožitků. Každý z hrdinů je naprosto jiný, a tak zpočátku bojují při hledání cesty k vzájemnému respektu, ale poté se začnou krůček po krůčku poznávat a nakonec se začnou mít rádi.

Tato kniha je skutečně nesmírně povzbuzdivá. Miluji to, jak Karen Joy Fowler shromažďuje tyto rozličné osobnosti, aby společně četli a diskutovali o románech Jane Austenové. Přidat špetku Austenové do moderního příběhu mi připadá jako naprosto úžasný nápad a myslím, že Karen Joy Fowler skvěle využila jeho potenciál.

Mojí nejoblíbenější postavou je Jocelyn. Opravdu ji mám moc ráda. Přestože má ty samé špatné vlastnosti jako já. Nebo možná právě z toho důvodu. Na druhou stranu si myslím, že ty dobré vlastnosti v ní převažují. Tak jako tak mám za to, že je skvělá, a také jí v mnohém rozumím, což je fajn, neboť v celé knize je i spousta postav, které tak dobře uchopit nedokážu. Například Allegra, která je vážně docela zvláštní. Tím ale nemyslím, že ji nemám ráda, tak to není. Je jen zkrátka úplně jiná, než já. Ale to je vlastně součástí toho, co mám na knize The Jane Austen Book Club ze všeho nejraději. Mám na mysli to, že vypráví o tolika rozdílných charakterech, které - alespoň na první pohled - nemají absolutně nic společného. Nakonec se však ukáže, že ve skutečnosti mají. Společně čtou Austenovou a u toho se začínají mít rádi. Opravdu se mi moc líbí myšlenka, že právě knihy jsou prostředkem ke spojování lidí. To je pro mě skutečně to nejkrásnější sdělení z celé knihy.

Každý z nás má svoji vlastní verzi Jane Austenové. Ta moje píše o rodinných vztazích, neboť ty jsou - alespoň podle mě - ještě důležitější než záležitosti lásky. Skutečně nevím, co bych si počala bez svého bráchy. Samozřejmě, že od té doby, co jsme dospělí, s ním netrávím tolik času, jako když jsme byli malí, ale vím, že tu pro mě je, kdykoli ho budu potřebovat, a stejně tak jsem tu já pro něj. Až tu jednou nebudou moji rodiče, aby pomohli, a můj údajný manžel praští do bot a uteče, můj brácha tu stále bude, aby stál při mně. A to je, řeknu vám, nesmírně uklidňující představa. Právě z toho důvodu je mojí nejoblíbenější knihou Austenové Rozum a cit. Opravdu zbožnuji způsob, jakým Jane Austenová líčí sesterský vztah mezi Elinor a Marianne. Myslím, že tohle je to, na čem opravdu záleží. Zároveň si ale myslím, že naše rodina nemusí nutně být ta pokrevní. Můžeme ji najít i mezi našimi přáteli a životními partnery (zrovna tak jako hrdinové knihy The Jane Austen Book Club) a tento typ rodiny může být stejně skutečný jako ten první.

Doporučila bych tuto knihu úplně každému, ne jen příznivcům románů Jane Austenové. Karen Joy Fowler napsala tento příběh s autentičností skutečného života a já si myslím, že každý z nás může najít něco, co má společného s hrdiny, které vytvořila. Také její styl psaní je velice působivý. Opravdu byste si to měli zkusit přečíst...

"It wasn't Jane Austen's fault that love went bad. You couldn't even say she didn't warn you. Her heroins made out well enough, but there were always other characters in the book who didn't finish happily. These were the women to whom you should be paying attention, but you weren't."

The story of The Jane Austen Book Club takes place in Sacramento Valley, California. Six people (five women and one man) join the book club under which they read Jane Austen's novels and at the end of the month per half a year they meet and talk about their thoughts and insights from reading and then even experiences form their own lifes. All of the characters are very different. Consequently they quite struggle with finding way to respect each other initially but then they learn about themselves little by little and eventually they become to like each other.

This book is really comforting. I love how Karen Joy Fowler gathers these sundry personages to read and discuss about Jane Austen's novels to each other. It is an amazing idea to add a pinch of Austen's extract into the modern story and I think that Karen Joy Fowler exploits the potential of it very well.

My favourite character is Jocelyn. I truly like her. Although she has the same bad qualities as I have. Or maybe it's the reason of it. On the other hand I think that the good qualities outweigh in her. Anyways she is awesome and I really understand her in many ways which is nice. There are also characters in the book that I don't grasp pretty good. For example Allegra. She is quite peculiar. But it doesn't mean that I don't like her. It is not so. She is just very different than me. But this is actually a part of what I have particularly enjoyed about The Jane Austen Book Club. I mean there are so many diverse characters and they have absolutely nothing in common. At least it seems like that at beginning. But at the end it turns out that they actually have. They read Jane Austen together and simultaneously they become to love each other. I really like the idea that books can be the instrumentalities that brings people together. It is just the most beautiful communication of this story for me.

Everyone has a private Austen. Mine writes about family relationships because those are even more important than love affairs. At least to me. I don't know what I would do without my brother. We obviously don't spend too much time together since we are not kids any more but I know that he is here for me any time I might need him and so am I for him. When my parents won't be here to help and my reputed husband will be decamped, I will still have my brother by my side. And this is a thought full of relief, I am telling you. For that reason is Sense and Sensibility my favourite book by Jane Austen. I really adore the way in which Jane Austen describes the sisters relationship between Elinor and Marianne. I think that this is what really matters. But I also think that our family don't necessarily be the ancestral. We could find our family among our friends and life partners (just as the characters in The Jane Austen Book Club), and this type of family can be as real as the first one.

I would recommended this book to an everyone, not just to the fans of Jane Austen's novels. Karen Joy Fowler has written this story with an authenticity of real life and I think that each of us can find something common with the characters she has created. Also her writing style is very impressive. You really should check this book out...
